Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a chronic condition of the gastrointestinal tract which is characterized by abdominal pain, cramps, flatulence, bloating and disruptions in bowel movements. This condition can hamper daily functioning due to the discomfort it causes. The exact cause of irritable bowel syndrome is still not certain.
It is believed to develop due to a combination of factors such as disruptions in movements of the gastrointestinal tract, pronounced awareness of normal body functioning and changes in communication between the brain and gastrointestinal tract. In some cases, abnormalities in colon functions are also observed. Prolonged gastroenteritis can also result in irritable bowel syndrome. Allergies to certain types of food are thought to play a role in this condition, but this has not been proved. During times of stress or during menstruation, the condition is known to become aggravated.
The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome vary in different individuals. However, the most prominent sign of this condition is pain and discomfort in the abdomen. Some of the other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome include alternate bouts of constipation and diarrhea, changes in the consistency and frequency of stools, flatulence, mucus discharge from the rectum and tightness or pressure in the abdomen. The drainage of mucus from the anus could be the cause of the itching and irritation you are experiencing. The stomach pain and cramps usually tend to ease after bowel movements. If these symptoms are accompanied by other symptoms such as passage of blood in stools, fever and weight loss, then a medical examination is required, as they could be indicative of other more serious conditions.
The irritation and inflammation caused by irritable bowel syndrome can be relieved by taking ginger either directly or in the form of tea. Boiling a teaspoon of flax seed in a cup of water and consuming before going to bed, will also help to alleviate the symptoms of this condition. Increasing the intake of fiber in the diet is very essential for regulating proper bowel movements. You can also take psyllium husks with yogurt an hour before meals to add fiber to the system. Also drink plenty of water so that the consistency of the stools remains soft, thereby allowing for easy passage. An effective home remedy is to take equal portions of ground black pepper, ginger and cardamom seeds. Take half a teaspoon of this mixture with water before meals. This will help in digestion and reduce inflammation in the intestines. Indian gooseberry taken raw is also beneficial in treating irritable bowel syndrome.
