Yogurt constitutes a delicious and healthy snack. It has many health benefits that make it the ideal food that can be taken any time during the day. Yogurt contains calcium, protein, vitamin B 12 and riboflavin.
Yogurt also contains certain additional cultures and even contains more protein and calcium than milk. These cultures are made up of certain microorganisms that are living and active which provide several health benefits. Yogurt consists of a substantial quantity of phosphorus and eighty-eight percent of water and is essential for good natural defenses of the body. Individuals affected by osteoporosis are advised to take a minimum of one serving of yogurt daily. It is also believed that yogurt may carry some kind of protection against certain cancers; however, research on the matter is still on-going.
Yogurt comes in three different types. Regular or whole milk yogurt, low fat yogurt and skim yogurt. Skim and low fat yogurt is low in cholesterol and as such is helpful for those trying to reduce their weight or cholesterol levels. Some individuals are lactose intolerant and are unable to digest the lactose that is present in milk. This is due to a deficiency of the enzyme called lactase. The live cultures in yogurt are able to produce the lactase that is necessary for breaking down the lactose. Yogurt also helps to enhance the working of the immune system of the body, thus protecting the body from colds and flu. It also works to regulate the growth of the good bacteria in the intestine, thereby aiding in digestion and protecting against infections. Yogurt is also beneficial in alleviating yeast infections of the vagina. It also helps to prevent diarrhea that is caused by antibiotics, combats urinary tract infections, prevent hemorrhoids and alleviates constipation.
Unflavored yogurt is better as flavored yogurt tends to contain more sugar, and therefore more calories. In addition to this, it is always better to have less artificial flavoring in your food as these chemicals can put a strain on your kidneys. There are many healthy ways by which you can add yogurt to your diet. Yogurt can be used instead of salad dressings or mayonnaise. Frozen yogurt is also a nutritious alternative to ice cream. It can also be used to make delicious fruit smoothies. Instead of sour cream, use yogurt for dips. Cream cheese can also be replaced with yogurt. Yogurt can also be used for marinating of poultry and meat. Yogurt tends to curdle when cooked at high temperatures. Adding one tablespoon of cornstarch to the yogurt before heating will prevent curdling. If you want to flavor your yogurt, you can blend it along with the fruit of your choice. This will also increase the nutritive value of the yogurt.

Yogurt health advice-
- Best is the organic yogurt. There has to be natural culture and more lactic acid acting upon the milk protein preferably from a cow. Flavored ones aren't that good.
- You can add some fruits like strawberries, pineapples and raisins to make a richer and healthier yogurt variety.
- Eat yogurt after sunrise and till 1 hour before sunset. This is ideal time for consuming that to on empty stomach to get its benefit.
- Yogurt can be eaten as a meal or had with water as a digestive drink with black pepper and cumin powder sprinkling.
