Neck pain, which is also known as cervicalgia, is quite common among many people all over the world. It may surprise you to know that two-thirds of the world’s population has experienced neck pain at some time or the other. However, severe neck pain for over three months necessitates medical attention.
If your medical practitioner is unable to detect any abnormalities from your CAT scan, there are other tests he/she might have in mind. You can always seek another opinion. Diagnostic tools include X-rays, MRIs, Myelography/CT scanning (which in some cases are used instead of a MRI) and electrodiagnostic studies. Remember that neck pain may have its origins in countless other spinal problems. Neck pain could be caused by factors such as muscular tightness in not only the neck but also the upper back, or it could be due to pinching of the nerves stemming from one’s cervical vertebrae.
A joint disruption in the neck or in the upper back causes the pain felt during a neck ache. There could be many causes for the same such as trauma, unhealthy posture, certain degenerative diseases and even tumors. Treatment would ultimately depend on the cause of your particular problem. Some of the more common treatments that are prescribed are medication (typically anti-inflammatory medication), body mechanics training, local application of either moist heat or ice and physical therapy. Doctors may also prescribe a cervical collar for a day or two which would help you support your neck or certain exercises to ease the muscles.
Body mechanics essentially focuses on movement and posture. It would help if you avoid specific habits like slouching or a head-forward posture. If you do happen to work at the computer try to keep the monitor aligned such that the top of the screen is adjusted to eye level. A common cause of neck pain is cradling the receiver on one’s shoulder when talking on the phone. If driving, your car seat should be upright such that it supports your head in addition to your lower back. When holding the steering wheel while driving, see that your arms are somewhat flexed and comfortable. Cervical pillows or rolls may also help ease neck stress. Lifting with your knees can also do wonders for your back and neck. Physical as well as emotional health problems can lead to neck pain so it’s important to get the right diagnosis before rushing in for expensive tests. You should not venture to treat such a prolonged pain without your doctor’s advice.
