what is arnica
(13 Dec 2007)

The use of arnica and arnica oil has become quite common, especially by those who believe in alternative methods of healing. However not a lot of people are even aware of what is arnica or what arnica oil and arnica pills are, or even what the different arnica oil benefits and uses could be. Hence, before using any product, it is very important for people to get adequate information about it, regardless of whether the product is natural or has been manufactured commercially.

What is Arnica?

Also known as Leopard’s Bane, arnica refers to a perennial herb, which is native to Eurasia and North America. Several companies use arnica oil, in the manufacture of tincture, which is applied on the body topically, in the treatment of bruises and sore muscles. The use of arnica oil for bruises is a fairly common practice, in several parts of the United States. This herb is easily available at most pharmacies or health stores, in the form of arnica pills, arnica gel, arnica cream and arnica oil.

Arnica Oil Uses
There are several different ways in which arnica can be used, as there are numerous benefits that have been associated with it. The most common use of the herb is to soothe muscle aches, heal wounds and reduce inflammation. This is because one of the most important arnica oil benefits is that it contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which can reduce, swelling, pain and itchiness. Moreover, this substance is good for stimulating the circulation of blood to the wounded area that it is applied on, which in turn expedites the healing process. Externally, people use arnica oil for hair loss, chill blains, rheumatism, abdominal pain, injuries, irritation, sprains, arthritis, swelling, bursitis and trauma. At times, this herb can be applied to swollen veins, which are the result of blood clots. The pain caused by a facture can also be alleviated to some extent, with the help of this herb.

Several scar removal creams and other skincare products contain the arnica herb as one of the main ingredients. There are many people who make a homemade poultice using arnica and apply it on the affected part of the skin, for relief. This is more common, in case of abdominal pain or soreness in the muscles.

There are many homeopaths and alternate healing practitioners who may also recommend the consumption of arnica pills, in order to cure certain problems. However, medical practitioners usually advise people against ingesting arnica internally. There are some people who dilute arnica with water, to make a solution, with which they can gargle.

However, arnica should not be used in any form, for any extended period of time, or else it could lead to certain side effects. Some of the most common arnica side effects seen include irritation of the skin, blisters, eczema, peeling of the skin, as well as other skin conditions. The recommended dosage of this herb may vary from one person to the other, based on factors like age, overall physical condition and medical history. Therefore, in order to avoid any adverse arnica side effects, it is absolutely essential to check with a doctor, before ingesting the herb, or even before applying it topically, on a bruise. Medical experts warn people against the use of arnica on skin that has been broken or in case there is a rash on the skin. Women who are expecting should also avoid using arnica oil in pregnancy, at least until they check with their doctors and get a go ahead. There is a lot of information on arnica and its different products, though online resources; however, it is best to check with a doctor, before using this herb in any form.

Arnica is a perennial plant native to Europe and North America. The yellow-orange flowers of this plant are used in medical preparations (both fresh and dried form). Tropically arnica is used for different conditions like bruises, muscle aches, sprains, inflammation, rheumatic pain, wound healing, insect bites and swelling caused mainly due to fractures. Many homeopathic preparations are also available in the market which helps in conditions like muscle sores, bruises and other situations which are caused by trauma or over exertion. It is available in different forms commercially like ointments, tropical creams, and tinctures. Homeopathic medicines can be in pill form, tropical form or injectable form. Arnica should never be taken without a prescription from a specialist or health care professionals due to its probable side effects and possible interactions with other drugs in the body. Please inform your specialist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on other drugs before taking arnica.
