The hormones produced by thyroid gland play important functions in the body like they play a major role in your metabolism, basic metabolic rate, heart rate etc. Your system runs perfectly till these hormones are secreted in appropriate amounts but a decrease or increase in these hormones can upset many body functions. An underactive thyroid gland or hypothyroidism can affect your body in different ways and cause many health problems like heart disease, excessive and unexplained weight gain (in spite of low intake) infertility and joint pain. Some common signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism includes fatigue, constipation, increased cold sensitivity, heavy menstrual period, obesity, high cholesterol levels, puffy face, dry skin, horse voice, muscle weakness, muscle aches, pain, swelling and stiffness in joints and depression.

It is important to treat hypothyroidism as when left untreated these symptoms can worsen or get severe. Consult a specialist who would prescribe accurate dosage of these hormones after performing certain thyroid function tests.
