Eating disorders are a group of psychological disorders which not only affects a person’s self-esteem but also affects her/his physical wellbeing. Eating disorders broadly includes anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and obsessive compulsive disorder. The fashion that involves starvation in anorexia nervosa often has detrimental effects on the organ systems of the body.

Some of the physical signs and symptoms which invade the organ systems include constipation, lack of menstrual periods (amenorrhea), dry skin, abnormally low heart rate, hypotension, abdominal problems, anemia, fine body hair, cardiovascular problems, kidney dysfunction, changes in brain structure and osteoporosis.  Bulimia nervosa that includes self-induced vomiting can also damage the organ systems of the body. Common problems can be mineral and electrolyte disturbances, erosion of the teeth enamel, swelling of the salivary glands, long term bowel disturbances due to excessive laxative abuse.

Some complications like rupturing of the stomach, tearing of the esophagus, and irregular heart rhythm can also occur.
