Rheumatism is a derivative of the Greek word 'rhuema', meaning swelling. It is a very painful condition wherein the joints of the sufferer swell up. Rheumatism affects both men and women, mostly when they are above the age of 45 years.

There are two classifications of rheumatism - muscular rheumatism, which is an affliction of the muscles, and articular rheumatism, which afflicts the joints. The primary causes of rheumatism are heredity, damp weather conditions, hormonal disorders, and physical stress. However, rheumatism is actually a group of conditions, and there are many more possible causes.

The symptoms all revolve around joint inflammation, but there may be other additional symptoms as well, and the causes may differ considerably.

To keep yourself safe from rheumatism and other similar ailments related to the bones, tissues and muscles, it is very important to maintain a balance of calcium, vitamins and phosphorous in your body. So include lots of green leafy vegetables, milk and milk products, fresh fruits, especially banana and prunes in your diet. Also ensure that you get sufficient sunlight, which is one of the main sources of Vitamin D. You should also maintain a regular exercise regime, with activities like jogging, aerobics, dancing, walking, cycling, and swimming, and racquet sports like tennis or squash. Take up one of these physical activities for about 30 minutes everyday. Lifting light weights also helps a lot.

You can also try some home remedies for rheumatism. Having 1-2 teaspoons of raw potato juice prior to your meals is supposed to help relieve the symptoms of rheumatism. Another decoction that works very well in curing rheumatism is two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and honey, each dissolved in a glass of warm water. Taking this once or twice everyday is said to bring instant results. One tablespoon of a mix of equal proportions of fresh carrot juice and lemon juice everyday also cures rheumatism. Another very simple and effective remedy is taking one tablespoon of fresh lime juice mixed in two tablespoons of water in the morning and before going to bed.

Massaging the affected areas with almond oil also brings relief from the pain and strengthens bones. Walnut has 3-omega fatty acids that the body cannot produce and has anti-inflammatory properties too. Consuming about six walnuts everyday will reduce the swelling caused by rheumatism considerably. Similarly, celery is an effective dietary cure for rheumatism. Mix 5 to 10 drops of fluid extract of celery with a glass of hot water and drink it before meals everyday. You can also juice one orange and mix it with one tablespoon of cod liver oil, whip the mixture well, and drink before going to bed.

Rheumatism is a chronic autoimmune disease which involves inflammation in the joints, connective tissues or muscles accompanied with pain. It can also affect internal vital organs like heart, kidneys, lungs and skin. There are more than 100 different conditions which are commonly referred as rheumatism. You would find this term more in historic medical texts as it is not frequently used in the current medical texts. Rheumatism symptoms would depend largely on the underlying disorder; however common symptoms include severe joint pain, fever, muscle pain, swelling and redness in the joints, stiffness in the muscles, heart symptoms, lung symptoms, and eye symptoms. Common rheumatic disease include fibromyalgia, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, polymyositis, scleroderma, dermatomyositis, tendintis, bursitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, vasculitis, complex regional pain syndrome, carpel tunnel syndrome and arthritis. Many people associate arthritis to represent rheumatism, however arthritis is only a part of rheumatic disease.
