Dandruff is one of the skin conditions that affect almost everyone at some point of time. Our scalp becomes dry and flaky for two major reasons – unhygienic condition of the scalp and general bad health. If you desire to eliminate dandruff, you need to eliminate its causes first.

These causes include poor hygiene, bad eating and sleeping habits, stress, and tension. But then again, there are some other reasons like use of harmful chemical products like harsh shampoos, hair dyes, and hair colors. Dandruff can be a tricky situation to deal with because even though it’s usually caused by a dry scalp, an oily scalp also attracts dirt and accumulates dead cells, and thus causes dandruff.

So while you need to keep your scalp and hair well oiled, you also need to ensure it’s clean.

Make sure you keep your scalp healthy by following a balanced diet full of green leafy vegetables, grams, fruit juices, cereals and fruits. Drinking at least two liters of water everyday is also important. Avoid tea, coffee, oily and junk food, meat and chocolates. Also avoid an excess of Vitamin C as it is can aggravate dandruff. So exclude foods with acidic propensity like oranges, lemons, tomatoes, and tamarind from your daily diet.

You can find effective remedies to counteract dandruff right in your kitchen. One of the easiest yet effective remedies is applying 1-2 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice, letting it stay for 20 minutes and then washing it away. This prevents dandruff and makes hair lustrous. Sandalwood also has a positive effect on the scalp. Apply a mix of sandalwood oil and lemon juice in 1:3 proportion, leave it overnight and wash off with a mild shampoo the next morning. Applying aloe vera gel in the night and washing off next morning is also very beneficial to get rid of dandruff and any other infection of the scalp. Apple cider vinegar is also very helpful in treating dandruff. In between shampooing, dab apple cider vinegar mixed with an equal amount of water or use it as a final rinse after shampooing to disperse dandruff. Curd is as beneficial as lemon juice in combating dandruff. Leave curd to ferment for about 3 days, smear it all over your scalp and hair, let it dry for an hour and then wash it off. Comb your hair everyday to improve blood circulation. Massaging your scalp with herbal oil also helps a lot.

Natural Cures for Dandruff

No dandruff shampoos work if they are based on synthetic chemicals, but they cause enough damage to hair.

Make a mixture of following powders on equal parts based on weight basis.

1. Indian gooseberry 2. Trifla 3. Turmeric 4. Margosa leaves powder 5. Guduchi 6. Jaswanti

Take 4 tsp of this mixture, add 2 tsp fresh curd (yogurt) to it and a little warm water to make a paste which has convenient consistency for application to hair. You should also add half a tsp of lemon juice to increase the potency as anti-dandruff shampoo. after applying this paste to roots of hair by finger tips, wait 20 minutes and wash with luke warm or cold water.

Thrice a week, for one month is what is the expected to time to clear the dandruff by this natural hair shampoo. do not use any other soap, liquid for hair wash.
