Anxiety or feeling anxious is a natural and normal human response to certain situations. But, it can be a cause for concern if one experiences anxiety without any reason or stimulus. If you are always worrying you need to take care of the problem as soon as possible because after a point it can cause you physical problems as well.
If you are: unable to relax or calm down, constantly restless and apprehensive, irritable, exhausted, breathless, nauseous and unable to concentrate, you are definitely anxious. Anxiety can be caused by many factors like work and academic pressure, the body’s chemical processes, bad experiences, illnesses or any other major crisis. Since anxiety is a psychological and emotional problem, you need to work on both these aspects.
As far as natural cures for anxiety are concerned, aromatherapy is considered one of the most effective ones to soothe the nerves and make one feel relaxed. Essential oils extracted from various herbs and plants like jasmine, sandalwood, lavender, cypress, geranium, rose and lavender and can be used as massage oils or blended with your bath. Whenever you feel the onset of an anxiety attack, have a cold shower or a warm bath, anything that you are comfortable with; it helps ease the tension and calm the nerves. Engaging in exercises also calms the mind and body. A good work-out produces chemicals in the body that help reduce stress and anxiety. Meditating and breathing exercises are also known to work wonders to reduce the level of anxiety and stress.
There isn’t a definite diet that can alleviate anxiety. However, you can alter food habits to feel the difference. Many people tend to rely on binges and ‘comfort eating’; that will cause you more harm than benefit. If you do feel compelled to eat, go for a platter of fruits with an inviting dressing. Some other food habits that can reduce anxiety to an extent are: drink lots of water, get adequate compounds like minerals and vitamins - Vitamin B deficiency can cause anxiety. Avoid alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and tobacco. Try a decoction of water and rose petals with one teaspoon of sugar added to it. Drinking this relieves anxiety. Another combination that helps in reducing anxiety is apple with milk and honey. Roots of asparagus and Licorice tea are also helpful in reducing stress and anxiety level. You can also talk to your friends and family on a regular basis. This seemingly small step has been proven to significantly relive anxiety levels.

Anxiety occurs when there is a fear about something which you don’t know and you generally expect negative results out of it. Try the following home remedies to curb your anxiety - - Breathe in and breathe out slowly to relax your anxiety. To ensure that you’re doing it correctly place your hand exactly below the ribcage and feel your diaphragm with each inhalation and each exhalation.
- Analyze the situation with a calm mind and try to figure out what is it that is the cause of your fear. Then try to work out a solution for it.
- Meditation would also help to calm your anxious feeling and make you feel good. Try and meditate for 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening.
- Try some repetitive exercises like jogging, running, swimming or cycling, it has similar calming effects as meditation.
Consult a specialist if your anxiety interferes with your daily work routine or your personal relationships.
