Heartburn remedy: Heartburn? A gnawing pain accompanied by discomfort is typical of heartburn. It is a problem associated with the digestive system and has got nothing to do with the heart.
Pain in the chest and belching are also common. Also referred to as reflux oesophagitis, heartburn is seen to occur frequently in pregnancy, smokers and obese individuals. Reducing or limiting the acid production helps.
This is accomplished by having frequent and small meals. Alcohol is better avoided, as it results in regurgitation of stomach contents. Half a teaspoon of baking soda, added to half a glass of water proves beneficial. Rice helps in relaxing the sphincter muscles. Adequate intake of water is recommended, between the meals. A mixture of a tablespoon each of honey and cider vinegar in a glass of warm water is an effective treatment, especially in the initial stages. Raw onions, spicy foods, chocolate, carbonated beverages are avoided, as they trigger heartburns. Juices of pears, papaya, guava and mango are helpful. Citrus juices are not recommended.
