Acne is not really the main problem but the symptom of other underlying health problem(s) and faulty habits. The sebaceous glands in our skin and hair follicle produce natural oils that sometimes go into overdrive for a number of reasons. This increased oil production causes dead skin cells and bacteria to accumulate, ultimately resulting in the development of pimples.

On top of this, poor eating habits - erratic eating hours, excessive consumption of sugar, starch, and oil are often thought to contribute to acne too. These and other bad habits such as irregular hours throw body functions out of gear, thus aggravating the problem of acne. Therefore, you must first ensure that your diet and lifestyle are healthy and regular if you want to get rid of acne.

Whatever the underlying causes may be, acne is first and foremost caused by dead skin cells blocking pores, which then accumulate sebum and often get infected. Regular cleansing and exfoliation of the skin is therefore extremely important. The most effective cure for this problem is an acne cream that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Anti pimple creams are an option that is often ignored. Cosmetic anti pimple creams contain several additional and unnecessary chemicals. These creams often cause intense irritation and so they should be ignored completely. Medicated Anti pimple creams do not contain these additional chemicals and have been seen to be very effective. Remember though, that the cream must contain either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, as these ingredients are essential for the skin to properly discard dead cells. Benzoyl peroxide also kills the bacteria within the pores that cause the inflammation. In addition to this, regular cleansing and exfoliation will help. This can be done with commercially available products or with home remedies; it is up to you to choose.

It is also important to regularly moisturize our skin as this ensures that our skin remains smooth, has fewer fine lines and the surface is less coarse. Moisturizing oily skin can of course be tricky because creams tend to make the skin oilier, causing acne. A good remedy for this is washing your face with milk, which has a natural moisturizing effect. Wash your face at night especially, to remove make-up residue or other dirt and grime. You can make a mix of three drops of sandalwood or lavender oil and 2 tablespoons of milk, and massage your face gently every night to cleanse it. Honey is a great moisturizer that doesn’t make the skin oily or clogged and provides it with essential nutrition. Moisturize your skin with a thin layer of honey smeared all over the face. Keep it on for 15 minutes then wash it off with lukewarm water. A face pack made of wheat or gram flour, turmeric powder, rose water, honey, milk or curd and lemon applied for about 20 minutes and washed off with warm water not only gets rid of acne but also moisturizes the skin naturally.

Acne remedy

Acne and the resultant scars are difficult to handle. Clogging of the pores, due to excessive sebum results in acne and pimples. Blackheads and whiteheads are also common. Tightening the pores by rubbing ice cubes is equally effective. Sandalwood paste made with rose water is an effective treatment for acne and its scars. Avoid oily cosmetics, as they aggravate the clogging of pores. Cucumber juice used as a face wash or cucumber slices placed on the affected area helps. Washing the face with an antiseptic soap is helpful. Poor lifestyle and diet plays a major role in alleviating acne and pimples. Popping them is not recommended. Fried foods, refined carbohydrates, junk foods, caffeinated beverages, artificial sweeteners and soda are completely eliminated from the diet. Exposure to steam is helpful in opening up clogged pores, thereby resulting in easy cleansing. Aloe vera in soaps are useful, as they are effective wound healers. Dust or impurities on the bed linen or mattress are major but unseen causes of acne. Commercial products with benzoyl peroxide are effective in treating acne. Medications with iodide or bromide are avoided.
