Sore throat natural cures

what is a natural cure for a sore throat?
(11 Dec 2007)

The itchy and painful feeling at the back of the throat, also known as sore throat, is one of the most common ailments. A sore throat is the inflammation of the pharynx (back of the throat) caused by viral infections like a cold, cough and flu. When suffering from a sore throat, your lymph glands often become tender and sensitive, and you also have difficulty swallowing.

Usually a sore throat gets cured without medication within a couple of days, but the problem can be quite annoying. It would therefore be better if you could take all the necessary precautions to avoid developing a sore throat at all. If you make sure that you have a strong immune system, you are much less likely to suffer from a sore throat whether the weather changes or someone else around you has an infection. Just follow the basic rules of good health – a balanced diet full of green and leafy vegetables and fruits, a daily workout routine for at least 30 minutes, and adequate rest.

However, when you do suffer from sore throat, you must make a few more changes in your routine – avoid oily, fried and sour food, as well as foods that tend to irritate the throat or cause nasal congestion, such as banana, curd and grapes; preferably do not wash your hair, and stay away from cold water and cold foods.

You can also use some home remedies to get immediate relief. Firstly, ample intake of vitamin C will help to cure a cold and sore throat quickly. You can have fresh orange or lemon juice -make sure the juice is not cold to supply your body with vitamin C. Lemon is known to be effective in fighting infections. Make a decoction of lemon juice and honey added to a glass of hot water. You will get instant relief from pain and irritation.  An effective alternative to this treatment is a sweet tonic prepared from onions and honey. Chop up two onions in a bowl and add a spoon or two of honey to it. Cover the bowl and allow it to stand for about an hour. Take one teaspoon of this every couple of hours. Holy Basil leaves are also known for their effective remedial properties. Boil a few leaves in a cup of water, set the water aside to cool, and then strain it. You can use this as a tonic or a gargle solution. Gargling with warm water and a pinch of salt several times a day also gives relief to a sore throat. Garlic also has antibacterial properties that can be quite effective against a throat infection; try chewing on a piece of garlic to get instant relief from a sore throat.
