Blockage of the arteries, resulting in narrowing of the arterial lumen, result in increased cholesterol levels. Atherosclerotic plaques are commonly associated as a secondary disorder. High cholesterol levels are life threatening and calls for immediate attention.


Lifestyle modification with strict adherence to dietary restrictions is a part of the treatment procedure. Grapefruit pectin aids in oxidation, thereby reducing the cholesterol. A mixture of 4 cups of apple juice, 3 cups of white grape juice and half a cup of cider vinegar helps in the levels to fall.


A handful of walnuts are said to be of great help. Oatmeal everyday as a breakfast helps in reducing the cholesterol levels. Fruits added to the same also makes as a better alternative. Another important home remedy to reduce the cholesterol levels is to drink a decoction of 10 pieces of 1 inch cinnamon sticks boiled in water. Honey can be added to make it more palatable. Herbs, such as ginger and garlic are effective cholesterol reducers. Hydrogenated saturated fats are better avoided. Fresh fruits and vegetables are essential part of the diet. Plant foods are more recommended. Lean meats are included along with fish. Skinned poultry are equally harmless.
