While most people find it easier to gain weight than lose, there are some who cannot put on weight easily. If you are one of them, then it’s quite likely that your body type, bone structure and eating habits go against you when it comes to putting on weight. Before we tell you how to put on weight, remember that as long as you are healthy, you shouldn’t really worry about it.
If being thin is causing health problems, then you might want to visit a doctor for a checkup. However, here are some tips to help you achieve a normal body weight.
- You might want to begin counting your calories every day. While you need not stuff yourself with food, you can eat a little more than usual and by counting calories you will make sure that you are not eating too little.
- You have to get interested in food and eat more if you want to put on weight. Now, by that we do not mean that you must eat anything and everything. It is best that you meet a nutritionist and take his/her help to formulate a diet that is rich in nutrients. A nutritionist can guide you about how many more calories you need to add to your daily diet in order to see significant weight gain.
- You must have a feast if you want to gain weight. Choose all sorts of healthy nuts, cheeses, vegetables, fruits, milk and chicken. Between your meals, eat a healthy snack, like a fistful of nuts, a thick slice of cheese with a whole grain cracker, a glass of milk, a fruit or a salad with a rich healthy homemade dressing. You can use olive oil in your dressing as it is very healthy oil.
- You must plan your meals carefully, and once that’s done, make sure you follow the plan.
- You can focus on building muscle mass if you want to put on some weight. If you have increased the amount of food that you are eating, then make sure you work on toning exercises too – otherwise all those calories will be turned into fat, not muscle. Work with a personal trainer and try to workout a few times a week, without fail. Work on a combination of exercises like warm-ups, weights, bench-press, and rows. You can also join exercise programs like aerobics and yoga.
- While trying to gain weight, remember that you have to avoid eating bad fats, as those might create other health problems later. So avoid candies, fries and junk food. Eat more of healthy foods like lentils, beans, seafood, lean meats, whole grains, cereals, vegetables, and fruits.
- Drink a lot of water to prevent dehydration, and get enough rest.

Inadequate information regarding your gender, height, activity pattern and dietary regimen makes it difficult for me to help you to the utmost. Protein intake helps in muscle building. Eggs, whole pulses and legumes are helpful. Workouts or exercise sessions are important. They should be spaced well. Dumbbells, bar dips, bench presses, squats and pull ups are to name a few. Heredity plays a vital role in determining your weight. This point also requires consideration. Modifications in lifestyle help in achieving certain targets or in overcoming certain problems. Meat and fish in the diet helps to a considerable extent. Avoid saturated fats. Stress-free life also helps in gaining weight. Eight hours of sleep is equally essential. Adequate intake of fresh vegetables and fruits are recommended. Substances with high carbohydrates, such as cereals and tubers are helpful. Snacking and bingeing on nutritious foods are recommended. Fatty fried foods help, though recommended under limits. Adequate intake of liquids proves beneficial. Milkshakes, nutrient-dense energy drinks, fruit juices and health beverages are effective. High calorie foods, such as dried fruits, nutrient bars and baked products are effective supplements. A handful of peanuts are helpful.
