( 7 Dec 2007)

Causes of Low Sperm Count: There are several causes for low sperm count. Some of these are:

  • Wearing tight underpants, sitting for very long hours in one position and obesity and being over weight can reduce the sperm count.
  • If a man ejaculates too frequently then it can lower the sperm count.

It is important to give yourself a break before having sex or masturbating.
  • Consumption of too much of alcohol and smoking can also be some of the other factors.
  • Stress as well as mental and physical exhaustion can decrease your sperm count.
  • You should have regular check-ups for any infection in the prostate gland. These infections may go unnoticed but they can have a drastic effect on the sperm count.
  • Some of the other causes include zinc deficiency, use of steroids, and malformed genitals.
Ways to increase your sperm count: Here are a few ways to increase your sperm count.

  • It is important to not ejaculate too frequently otherwise your semen won’t be dense. For this, you must give yourself a gap of at least 3 days before you have intercourse again.
  • Since excessive alcohol and long term use of alcohol has a negative effect on the sperm count, it is advisable to refrain from drinking and smoking. Alcohol can hamper the functioning of the liver, which can raise the level of estrogen. So keep a check on your cigarettes and drinks, and if possible, keep away from them completely.
  • Good lifestyle habits and regular exercise can help to keep you in good health. This also has a positive affect on your sperm count.
  • A nutritious diet is also important. Make sure that the food you eat is high in protein, vitamins and minerals. Keep away from fatty foods and processed food products. Eat a lot of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, pulses and other fiber-rich foods. Reduce the amount of caffeine in your diet and drink lots of water to flush out the toxins from your body.
  • Even slightly elevated temperatures in the groin area have a  negative effect on sperm production.  To prevent this, wear loose cotton boxers, and do not indulge in hot saunas and baths. You should also make it a point not to keep your laptop on your lap as this too can cause a decrease in sperm count.
  • Make it a point to lose extra weight as it can cause estrogen and testosterone imbalance.
  • You might like to learn relaxation methods like meditation and yoga. These will help you de-stress and keep you in a happier frame of mind.
  • Once in a while, get a body massage with herbal oils. This improves the blood circulation and helps your body excrete toxins.
  • You can take herbal or natural supplements to help with sperm production. However, it is important that you talk to your doctor before you do so.

There are many reasons why a man’s sperm count could be inadequate. The reasons are: infected semen, heat caused by wearing tight underpants or staying in a hot bath for long hours, ejaculating repeatedly over a short period of time, excessive smoking and drinking as drinking affects your liver and shoots up estrogen levels. Additionally great mental and physical stress, zinc deficiency, toxic pollutants, being overweight, and physical problems such as deformed genitals are also some of the other causes. These factors can affect the quality and quantity of sperm in the semen, resulting in difficulty in conception. You can increase the sperm count if you deal with the above troublemakers. In addition, remember that many factors affect sperm counts only temporarily, and the sperm count of an individual varies considerably over time; it is advisable to test one’s sperm count at least thrice before coming to any conclusions. Remember to keep a gap of at least 3 weeks between two consecutive tests.

If subsequent tests still find that you have a low sperm count, you should take the following measures: meditate and exercise regularly, maintain a gap of three days between two consecutive ejaculations, make love in the morning or afternoon when the sperm levels are the highest, and restrict consumption of bitter, spicy and acidic foods. You must also maintain a balanced diet with enough whole grains, proteins, and vitamins-rich vegetables, shed excess weight as it causes testosterone and estrogen imbalances, and try not to go for saunas or remain in a hot bath for too long.

While all these precautions will help you to increase your sperm count, remember that you will also need to go to a specialist for advice and treatment. If you like, you can combine this treatment with some home remedies to get better results. However, remember that not all these remedies have been scientifically tested. Most of these are simple foods that are good for your general health and are supposed to help increase the sperm count too, but there is not enough evidence for the latter. Raw celery is one of these foods, as it contains androsterone, which is supposed to be good for sexual stimulation. In case you have a zinc deficiency, you can also include foods like oysters, bananas, avocados, almonds, and other nuts in your diet. Make an assortment of almonds, sunflower seeds, cashew nuts, raisins, and pistachios, and have half a bowl everyday. You can also mix crushed and ground dry dates in milk and honey and eat it everyday.

Having a low sperm count can be due to many reasons but here are a few ways by which you can control your low sperm cont and increase the levels -

  • Have sex less often until the problem resolves. The lesser you masturbate and have sex, lesser will be the sperm loss. Try to keep a gap of 3 days in between each ejaculation.
  • Try to control habits like smoking, alcohol consumption and too many medicines of any sort. Alcohol can change your liver function, causing a rise in estrogen levels which is a female hormone. This can be one of the reasons for low sperm production.
  • Eat a diet which is rich in protein, veggies and grains and cut down the fat intake you have. This is definitely good for your health.
  • Avoid astringent, harsh, and piquant foods. Reduce coffee and tea intake.
  • Avoid being in a sitting position for too long. And wear loose shorts or underwear.
  • Certain natural supplements can increase sperm production. You can try natural herbs and supplements like, Shilajit which can increase your sperm quantity, Winter cherry used by ancient sages to increase the sperm production, and winter cherry.
