Firstly, you need to identify the time and conditions under which you experience breathlessness. One of the factors that we tend to overlook when diagnosing respiratory problems is dust. If there is dust lying around in your house or at your work place or if you feel breathless when you are out in traffic, your breathing problem could be because of a severe dust allergy.
Another reason could be a pollen allergy, if breathlessness tends to be aggravated during spring time. Have your room dusted often, and decrease the presence of pollen or dust mites by using special air filters on your air vents. If you still have difficulty breathing, it could be mild asthma, in which case you need to get it checked immediately.
However, in addition to going to the doctor you can start taking some precautions yourself. Stay away from active and passive smoking, avoid consuming dairy products, and increase your intake of vitamins, especially Vitamin C, to strengthen your immune system, because respiratory problems are often caused by infections.
There are many natural remedies that help ease breathing problems, no matter what the cause is. Including onion and garlic in your diet as often as possible is an effective and easy way to cure most breathing problems. To get instant relief you can take half a tablespoon of fresh onion juice once a day. Honey is also an important product in treating different kinds of respiratory problems. It can be taken in various combinations for treating infections of the chest and throat. Mix a teaspoon of honey with two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water; now drink this decoction to ensure speedy relief. Alternatively, you can mix half a teaspoon of honey with fresh ginger paste, powder of 1-2 cloves and some black pepper. This will unblock the trachea or the windpipe, and regulate breathing. Turmeric is also a traditional natural medicine that kills bacteria that cause infections. It also decongests the bronchi thus easing breathing problems. Having a glass of hot milk with one teaspoon of turmeric powder not only brings relief but also keeps most infections at bay. Other than these, always ensure that you get adequate rest and are stress free. You should also consider breathing exercises and activities like yoga and swimming. However, do not rely solely on such remedies; if your problem is acute, waste no time in going to a specialist.

OK, one of the reasons of having a hard time breathing along with constant coughing is latent allergies. Take a good hard look around your home and work place. Do you see dust lying on the furniture? Does your coughing and breathing problem increase during spring time? Could be a pollen allergy or a dust allergy. You could also be suffering a mild form of asthma. To rule out allergies, you can try airing out your apartment space once a week and increase the dusting frequency. Another thing you can try is to use special air filters on your air vents to catch pollen or dust mites. Bronchitis can also be a major reason of coughing and breathing difficulties. Avoid smoking; reduce your intake of dairy products and up your levels of vitamins supplements specially vitamin C, which can boost your immune system. Some home remedies for cough are - Half tsp cayenne pepper, half tsp ginger powder, quarter tsp clove powder, two tsp honey, two tsp water, and one tsp water, are brewed for a few minutes in warm water. Sip this tea as many times as required through out the day.
- Two tablespoons cider vinegar in a glass of warm water seems to soothe the throat and reduce persistent coughs.
If your cough and breathing difficulties persist, please consult with a trained specialist to rule out allergies and sleep apnea. Remember its better to be safe then sorry.
