As any one who had a urinary tract infection, know the infection is exquisitely painful and extremely persistent. But if left untreated the infection can spread upward and involve the kidney causing a kidney infection called as pyelonephritis. So prompt and aggressive treatment is the norm.
But for people who are willing to try the naturopathic route, here are a few remedies which can allay a urinary tract infection,
- Unsweetened cranberry juice is a perennial favorite to ease the acidic burning which occurs due to a urinary infection. It also contains pro-anthocyanin compounds which can prevent bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls.
- Uva Ursi is an herb which contains and active ingredient called as arbutin which when ingested forms an active and astron antiseptic.
- Increase your intake of alkaline minerals like potassium citrate and sodium citrate which can alkalinize urine and decrease the burning sensation.
- Hot goldenseal root tea or a cold infusion of marshmallow root is also pretty helpful.
- Hot castor oil packs applied directly to the inflamed area also seem to help. Heat the oil and brush the warm oil on to the area and cover with a piece of muslin.
Herbs are helpful but be careful to use them under the supervision of a trained specialist.
