Tinea versicolor appears as a flat areas of discoloration and its usually formed by a fungal infection. Although the name is tinea which means worm in Latin. Tinea infections are usually caused by funguses. The shape of the infection is usually in a round patch and because of which the initialiy physicians ascribed the disease to worm infestations.

The disease can come on shoulders, arms, hands and fingers. The surface of the lesion will also be covered with fine scales. Tines versicolor is itchy but it’s definitely not contagious. There are no health problems associated with it except may be an increased tendency to itch. The infection is caused by a common fungus which lives on the surface of skin called as Pityrosporum ovale. It lives in skin pores and likes a mild oily environment in which to survive.

Treatment

Most adolescents or children who get this infection don’t really experience any discomfort but the best remedy is an OTC shampoo which contains selenium sulfides. Selenium sulphide is commonly used to control dandruff and reduce flaking. Rub good levels of the shampoo all over the body and let it remain for about five minutes repeat the procedure every night for at least five months and you could find significant improvement. If this does not work, consult with an experienced dermatologist as soon as possible.
