Hysteria causes and remedies Hysteria is a somewhat outdated term which is no longer used in medical diagnosis. The symptoms that were previously known as hysteria are now thought to be caused by a range of problems and are diagnosed variously as Somatization Disorder, Histrionic Personality disorder and sometimes, Dissociative disorder.
People who get attacks of hysteria normally have very high levels of anxiety and tend to bottle up their issues instead of communicating them regularly. Behavioural modifications to deal with hysteria include:
- Not focusing overly on the physical aspects of the problem and distracting yourself with music or other activities that you enjoy
- Communicating with family or close friends in a positive and open manner
- Getting lots of fresh air, exercise and a nutrient rich diet
- Involving yourself in activities that stimulate and engage you. Reading, gardening, dancing, playing an instrument or anything else that excites and interests you.
A teaspoon of honey everyday in the morning, asafoetida in the food in 1-1.5 gm portions, a mixture of lettuce juice and Indian gooseberry (indian gooseberry) may all help in soothing your nerves. Another home remedy for hysteria is Black berry fruit although this may not be readily available. Soak 3 kgs of Black berry fruit in a jug of water and leave it in the sun for seven days. You should take about 300gms of fruit with one cup of the water it was soaked in. This should last for about a week. Keep this up for two weeks at least.
If the problem is of a severe nature with frequent uncontrollable attacks, then do not rely solely on home remedies to tackle the problem. Consult a psychiatrist. Also rule out hormonal problems as an underlying trigger.
