Dark circles under your eyes are caused by several factors. Some of the most obvious reasons are lack of sleep, stress, dehydration, allergies, thinning of skin, and iron deficiency.
When there is a lack of sleep our skin becomes or appears paler; this allows the blood vessels to be more visible through the skin, thus giving the appearance of bluish or black circles around the eyes.
Apart from this, a deficiency of iron in the body also gives a bluish tinge to the skin under the eyes. Insufficient intake of fluids can also result in dilated vessels in the periorbital area, which result in the distortion of the natural color.
Dark circles can also be a result of allergies – to dust, pollen, and other air borne substances that can cause eye irritation. This often results in constant rubbing of the eye and the area around the eye, which consequently leads to dilated blood vessels and dark circles.
Some of the remedies available for the dark under eye circles are:
- Regular use of sunscreen lotions or creams with a minimum SPF of 30 will help prevent weakening of the under eye skin as a result of damage caused by the sun.
- Placing used and preferably refrigerated teabags on your eyes can help relax your eyes and constrict the blood vessels, which in return reduces the dark circles. However, this is only a temporary remedy.
- Cucumber slices can also be placed on your eyes, and will work in the same way. A hint of lemon on cucumber is supposed to help reduce the dark circles even more.
- Many people develop dark circles due to lack of sleep. Therefore, take proper rest, and sleep your regular quota of seven to nine hours every day.
- Drinking lots of water will help in keeping the body hydrated, which will in turn help reduce a lot of health problems, including dark circles.
- At the same time, consume less dietary salt, as an excess of salt can lead to water retention, puffy eyes, and dark circles.
- Include lots of green vegetables and fruits in your diet. They are natural sources of minerals and vitamin C, which help strengthen the blood vessels.
- Eat a lot of vegetables and fruits that contain antioxidants – such as legumes, onions, blueberries, and so on.
- Other than the above, avoiding caffeine and tobacco will help in maintaining the hydration of your skin. This will in turn help in reducing the dark circles.

Dark circles precipitate under the eyes due to many reasons including nutrient deficiency, stress or less hydration in the body, lack of sleep or rest. Try the following home remedies to get them under control -
- Soak fresh cucumber juice or freshly grated raw potato juice in a cotton ball and place it under the eyes, leave for 10-15 minutes. This is a very effective remedy for lightning dark circles.
- Dip two cotton balls in cold rose water and place it on the eyes for 10 minutes daily. Practice this especially before going to bed for a cooling and relaxing effect.
- To improve blood circulations under the eye lightly tap the upper and lower eyelids with the tip of your fingers. Massage your eyes lightly with almond oil in circular motion using the tips of your fingers.
- A sound sleep for at least 8 hours a day is very important to get rid of dark circles.
- Hydration is very important. Drink plenty of water and avoid taking any kind of stress as far as possible.
