Diet plays a very important role in the treatment of gout. Try the following home remedies along with the diet tips to ease your condition.

  • Lose weight if you are above your ideal body weight. Make weight loss a gradual process as rapid weight loss can cause acute flare-ups of uric acid in the body. Target to lose approximately ½ kg per week.
  • Minimize the consumption of purine-rich foods as foods that are high in purines break down in the body to uric acid. Common sources of purines (many animal products) include organ meats (liver, heart and kidneys), meat, pork, herring, mackerel and eggs. The gravies and broths from animal sources should also be avoided. Some pulses like peas, lentils along with low fat dairy goods contain moderate amount of purine and should be limited to 1-2 servings per day.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine. Alcohol especially beer contains purines and also interferes with the body’s excretion of uric acid.
  • Increase fluid consumption. Drink 2 to 3 liters of fluid each day to flush excess uric acid from your system. Include water, herbal teas, vegetable juice, milk, unsweetened fruit juices and soup in your daily fluid intake.
  • Include 1 apple and 2 bananas day as they are considered helpful fruits for gout.
  • Add flaxseeds, hemp seeds and pumpkin seeds to your diet, these foods contain health promoting omega 3 fatty acids, to reduce joint inflammation.
  • Add lemon juice to your diet, it prevents gout attacks by stimulating the formation of calcium carbonate in the body.
