Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that causes rapid skin cell reproduction, resulting in dry patches of thickened skin and redness of the skin. It is a non-contagious skin condition and is quite common. This skin condition or disease is seen in both men and women, and the age group in which it occurs is 15-30 years.
Some of the causes of psoriasis are heredity reasons, abnormality in the metabolism of amino acids and proteins, seasonal changes, injury to the skin, skin infections, stressful lifestyle, asthma, poor digestive system and weak immune system. However, the ailment is a curable one, and it can in fact be cured at home using certain home remedies.
Some of the home remedies which are easy to prepare with handy household ingredients are:
- Mud packs: Mud packs are effective in treating psoriasis. Mix powdered Fuller's earth with water to make a paste. Use this paste on the areas which are affected. Leave the paste to dry and rinse it off after this happens. This will help soothe your skin and reduce the inflammation gradually.
- Aloe Vera and garlic oil also helps in reducing the inflammation and redness of the skin. Mix an equal amount of Aloe Vera gel with garlic oil. Apply this to the affected area daily, and you will see the difference in a few days.
- An Epsom salt bath is another effective medication which works well for psoriasis. Take a bath with Epsom salts and apply olive oil on your skin after this.
- A concoction of olive oil, calendula and oregano also helps reduce the symptoms of psoriasis. Mix 2 drops of calendula oil with a drop of oregano oil in a cup of olive oil. Use this on the affected area. It will burn a little but you will see the results in a few days.
- Bitter gourd mixed with a teaspoon full of lime juice makes a great drink and is supposed to be an effective cure for psoriasis. Take this juice on an empty stomach every day for a week or so.
Other than the above remedies, one should also take care of one’s personal hygiene. Some of the measures which should be ensured in case of such conditions are:
- Keeping your skin well moisturized
- Avoiding too much exposure to the sun or pollution
It is also advisable to consult a doctor, especially if these treatments do not provide much relief or seem to irritate your skin. Some substances such as garlic oil can be quite strong, and may not suit sensitive skin types.
