Toe nail fungus infections are caused by the damp and unhygienic conditions of places like public gyms and swimming pools, excess moisture in the skin of the feet after bathing or exercising, an unnatural or abnormal pH level, wearing tight fitting shoes, and sometime due to problems with immunity.

Some of the most visible symptoms for toe nails fungus are discoloration of the toe nails, thickening of the affected toenails, ragged or brittle nails, foul smelling feet, accumulation of smelly remains inside the nails, and lusterless nails.

Toe nail fungus can be avoided by taking care of general hygiene.

Taking care of your feet by regularly washing and moisturizing them, and keeping it dry will be of great help. One should always make sure that the nails are properly trimmed on time to avoid nail breakage. Avoiding public toilets, bathrooms and swimming pools is a good measure.

Along with all the above mentioned precautions one can use the home remedies given below. Some of these home remedies are known to be very effective:
  • Tea tree oil: use tea tree oil on your nails with a cotton ball twice every day.
  • Lavender oil with tea tree oil: Mix an equal amount of lavender and tea tree oil in a cup. Apply this concoction using cotton balls to your nails twice or thrice a day. This is a very effective method which has been followed for long.
  • Vinegar: Soaking your feet in a bucket-full water and apple cider vinegar, you could also use regular vinegar  although this is thought to be less effective, will help in curing the fungal growth. Soak you feet in the concoction for 15-20 minutes, after which you have to dry your feet and toe nails thoroughly.
  • Mouthwash: The medicinal value of mouthwash also helps cure fungal growths. Soak your feet in an antiseptic mouthwash regularly.
  • Onion: Peel an onion, rub onion slices on the affected area, and then leave them on for a few minutes every day. Although a bit smelly, this remedy works quite well.
  • Soaking and washing your feet in alcohol will be of great help to stop the growth of toe nail fungus. Mix a bucket full of water with alcohol. The alcohol should be 20% of the mix. Soak your feet in it for 20-30 minutes, and then dry them thoroughly.

These are some of the most effective home remedies, but if the condition persists consult a doctor.

Try these home remedies to treat your toe nail fungus -

  • Soak your nail Listerine mouthwash, the potent antiseptic properties in it will help to help fight the fungus.
  • Tea tree oil has natural antifungal and antiseptic properties. To treat the fungus dab some tea tree oil in a cotton ball and apply it on the affected area.
  • Take warm water in a small bucket. Mix some apple cider vinegar in it. Soak your feet in it for 15-20 minutes. After removing the feet from water wipe it and remove the dead skin with the help of a nail filer. Cut the protruding nail straight.
  • Keep your feet clean and dry as far as possible. This fungus loves to multiply in a moist environment.
  • Wear a clean foot wear, preferably open. If you wear shoes then wear clean and comfortable cotton socks.
The fungus will clear gradually as the nail grows back, so be patient and follow the home remedies properly.

Mom & Grandma always soaked our feet in about 2 gallons of hot water w/ epsum salt (about 1 cup) dissolved in it and it worked. You may have to do it more than once. It also softens up those calluses and helps ingrown toenails.
