Question on blood pressure 

The pressure exerted by the arteries on the walls for the passage of blood is referred to as blood pressure. The normal levels are 120/80 mmHg. Also referred to as arterial hypertension, high blood pressure decreases the life expectancy.


The common causes for high blood pressure are age, gender, physical activity, stress and secondary infection. A blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg is considered high. It is life threatening, as hypertension accompanies other complications, such as renal disorders, atherosclerosis, stroke and nerve damage or degeneration.


The top number indicates the 'systolic pressure' or the arterial pressure during the contraction of the heart. Diastolic pressure or the arterial pressure during relaxation of the heart muscles is indicated by the number at the bottom. It is also referred to as a 'silent killer', as it fails to reveal any notable symptom. Consumption of medicines at required time interval is vital for treatment. Body weight is an important criterion, wherein regular exercise helps in curbing extra weight gain. Hypertension is treated with a healthy dietary regimen, exercise and lifestyle modification. Salt intake is curtailed. Alcohol and smoking are avoided. Plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables are recommended.
