Antacids help in reducing acidity caused by heartburn. Over-the-counter medications block the acid secretion in the intestine. Histamine blockers are also effective.
Antacids, especially before retiring to bed are important. Placing the head in an elevated fashion helps in preventing regurgitation of acidic contents. Avoid sleeping on water bed. Certain painkillers also affect by increasing the acid reflux. Carbonated beverages release carbon dioxide, which result in distention of the stomach, thereby resulting in acid reflux.
