Heartburn natural treatment

Re entry of acid into the oesophagus from the intestine is referred to as heartburn. A burning sensation in the chest with belching is seen to occur. Small amounts of reflux are common, though increased reflux results in bleeding.

Antacids help in reducing acidity caused by heartburn. Over-the-counter medications block the acid secretion in the intestine. Histamine blockers are also effective.

Antacids, especially before retiring to bed are important. Placing the head in an elevated fashion helps in preventing regurgitation of acidic contents. Avoid sleeping on water bed. Sleeping immediately after meals is recommended. Excessive weight is reduced, as abdominal fat presses against abdominal walls, thereby increasing acid reflux. Allow two to three hours after meal before going to bed. Peppermints increase heartburns. Avoid them, especially after meals. Increase in stress raises heartburns. Lead a stress free life. Pregnancy increases the risk of heartburn, especially in the last trimester. Avoid acidic and spicy foods. Alcohol is not recommended, as it relaxes the sphincter and irritates the stomach. Certain painkillers also affect by increasing the acid reflux. Carbonated beverages release carbon dioxide, which result in distention of the stomach, thereby resulting in acid reflux.
