Tailbone pain remedies.
(27 Nov 2007)

Tailbone pain or pain in the coccyx is also known as coccydynia in medical jargon. It is commonly caused due to a fall that lands up on the coccyx. Besides slipping over a wet floor other causes for tailbone pain includes osteoporosis, arthritis, or certain medications.

Tailbone pain can restrict simple activities like walking, sitting or passing a bowel. Decrease the pain by following these simple home remedies –

  • Put some ice in a plastic bag and apply it to the tailbone for 10-15 minutes, 4-5 times in a day.
  • A donut shaped pillow should be preferred for sitting instead of a hard surfaced chair. Also avoid sitting in a same position for long periods.
  • Prevent constipation as this can further make the bowel movements painful. Include high fiber foods in the diet like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and cereals, pulses and sprouts in the diet. Drink lots of water to stay well hydrated and keep the stool consistency soft.
  • To reduce swelling and pain sit for some time daily in a tub filled with hot water.

If the pain worsens restricting your movements then consult a specialist to rule out the problem.
