Jaundice Dietary Advice
Bilirubin accumulation in the blood results in darkening of the urine. It also results in change in skin color and darkening of stools. Maintenance of a healthy diet and strict lifestyle is helpful. A soft and bland diet is recommended.
Avoidance of animal foods is advised, as the digestive ability of the system is decreased. Increased production of bile is seen in case of heavy vegetarian foods. Citrus foods provide ascorbic acid. Poor digestion and improper eating might contribute to recurrence of infection.
Saturated fats and fried foods are avoided. Alcoholic beverages are completely abstained from. Vegetable broths and fresh vegetable juices are helpful. Processed foods, artificial sweeteners and flavorings are avoided. Alcohol puts a lot of burden on the liver. Apple, pineapple, pears, oranges and grapes are recommended in convalescence. A low carbohydrate and fat excluded diet is accepted.
Moderate exercise with a healthy diet prevents recurrence of jaundice. Supplementation of essential nutrients helps in regeneration of the liver cells. Foods which putrefy or ferment, such as legumes and pulses are avoided. Adequate amount of water, tender coconut and barley water are beneficial in flushing out toxins.
