Sore throat medication advice

My mother used to wipe my sore throat with something - my spelling may be off a little - mecurachorome merthiolate. Can I get this in pharmacies or anywhere?

Sore throat medication advice

This product is no longer easily available at pharmacies because it contains mercury, the use of which has been seriously regularized by health authorities worldwide. While mercury has its uses, it is also a highly toxic substance, and one you can do well without.

If you are having problems with a sore throat, there are some simple home remedies you can use to take care of it.

Take a mixture of half a teaspoon each of ginger juice and honey thrice a day. This will go a long way towards soothing your throat. Make a mix of a teaspoon each of powdered cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, ginger and four teaspoons of powdered sugar.

Half a teaspoon of this mixture taken twice a day with honey or warm water will also help ease soreness. Warm diluted orange juice is a good soother to the throat. If you are sore due to coughing, clamp a clove or a cardamom in your mouth and let it remain there overnight. This will reduce the cough. Drink a glass of hot milk with a teaspoon each of turmeric powder and honey every night before going to bed. This will help heal a sore throat. A cocktail of carrot, cucumber and beetroot juice will also help tremendously. Gargle with hot salt water, with a pinch of turmeric thrown in as many times as you can.
