Chest congestion is a symptom of the common cold or bronchitis. It is caused due to a buildup of phlegm and mucus in the nasal passages. Phlegm is a thick, sticky secretion that is given out by the nasal tract membranes.
An accumulation of the phlegm and mucus within the respiratory system will lead to a feeling of heaviness in the chest, a difficulty in breathing, and it can also cause chest pains, depending upon the intensity of the congestion. The main reasons for congestion of the chest are prolonged exposure to cold and the frequent occurrence of a cold and cough. Chest congestion is overcome by the body naturally, through coughing, causing phlegm to dislodge and be thrown out of the body in the form of sputum. Large amounts of phlegm being produced within the body could lead to an increased risk of chronic congestion. People who suffer from congestion should be careful to check for any streaks of blood that are visible in the sputum, as this is a symptom of Tuberculosis. The color and consistency of phlegm should be checked regularly so that a thorough check could be carried out to determine the cause of congestion.
Fatty foods that are difficult to digest remain deposited in the stomach, leading to congestion and constrictions in the respiratory passages. It is recommended that fatty foods be avoided and that a light form of exercise should be undertaken after a meal. A well known remedy for treating a cough that is accompanied with congestion is the juice extract of an onion. The extract generates heat in the body, causing the phlegm to come loose and be expelled from the body. Tonic made from onion juice and honey has also proved useful. A mixture of warm milk and turmeric powder provides quick relief from congestion of the chest. Hot tea will break up the mucus and loosen the phlegm, giving relief from congestion. Ginger is a time tested remedy for congestion. Ginger Tea, when hot, is extremely helpful in breaking up phlegm. A concoction of ginger, lemon and honey fight infection and clear up the respiratory tract, clearing up chest congestion. Although home remedies help to fight chest congestion, it is known that prevention is better than cure. There is no better way to prevent congestion than by keeping warm when going out into the cold and by keeping the chest protected.

Home Remedies for Chest Congestion with Cough and Mucus
Improving the humidity levels in the bedroom proves beneficial. This is done by leaving the vaporizer throughout the night. Water and other fluids are provided in adequate quantities. Removal of mucus from the chest is essential for relief from chest congestion. This is an ordeal, especially in children, as coughing up of the mucus is a difficult issue. Breathing is made easy by sleeping on an elevated level. Secretions are cleared by the intake of hot soups and broths.
Cigarette smoking irritates the respiratory passage and results in worsening of infection. Passive smoking is also equally dreadful. Over-the-counter expectorants clear up the bronchial passages, by loosening the mucus. Cough suppressants are also effective, though are avoided, in case of productive coughing, wherein the mucus is brought out. Inhalation of steam with a drop of eucalyptus oil in the water is helpful. Lobelia helps in relaxing the chest muscles and removal of pain. Foods rich in ascorbic acid are recommended. Garlic is an effective remedy against chest congestion. Supplements of calcium and vitamin B complex also proves to be effective for congestion and cough.
