The juice of bitter luffa has been known as one of the most efficient remedies for jaundice. You can extract this juice by squeezing the bitter luffa in a cloth and placing it in your palm. Inhale the juice in through the nostrils.

However special care should be taken as this could result in certain side affects such as migraine, fever and giddiness. Radish can also be used to cure jaundice. The green leaves from the radish plant should be ground thoroughly, squeezed and strained using a thin cloth.

Drinking about 500ml of this everyday could stimulate a healthy appetite and appropriate movement of bowels. Intake of bananas could also prove beneficial in treating jaundice. You should eat 2 bananas a day or mash 1 ripe banana and add a small quantity of honey to add flavor and have this mixture twice a day. Lemon and limejuice is also efficient in the treatment of jaundice. 20 ml of lemon juice mixed with warm water several times a day would help protect your damaged liver cells. Berberis vulgaris, specially named “the jaundice berry” due to its effect in the treatment of jaundice, can also be very helpful. The most important part is the bark; the juice extracted from the bark should be taken in small quantities of about quarter teaspoons four to five times a day.

Another effective plant that helps improve the live functions is chamomile, used to prepare tea. This tea can be taken once daily. Tomatoes are also very useful for jaundice. Mix salt and pepper with a glass of fresh tomato juice early morning on an empty stomach. Intake of several glasses of carrot juice during the day is also recommended. An alternative remedy is the intake of buttermilk. Two or three glasses of buttermilk with a pinch of black pepper on a daily basis would help in improving the liver functions. One of the most effective remedies is sugarcane juice. The intake of sugarcane juice with half a lime taken twice daily can speed up your recovery from jaundice, but it is important that you prepare the juice fresh at home and free of any infection.

Recovery from jaundice can be very slow and frustrating. Your immune system is also low and the body can be very fragile depending on the degree of jaundice that you suffer from. You should try and consume lots of liquids especially lots of lemon juice, sugarcane juice and coconut water.

Home Remedies for Jaundice

Jaundice is a condition when the level of bile pigments (mainly bilirubin) in the body increases causing yellowing of the skin and white of the eyes. Jaundice can cause extreme weakness, fever, loss of appetite, headache, nausea, constipation, and mild pain in the liver region. Mild form of jaundice can be treated effectively at home by following some dietary guidelines:

  • Include lots of fluid in your diet in the form of water, barley water, lemon juice, coconut water, all fruit juices, carrot juice, beet root juice, and prune juice, juice of bitter luffa and sugarcane juice. If possible add lime juice to all the juice or plain water or sugarcane juice as lime helps to fasten the recovery. More fluid will cause frequent urination which in turn will help to eliminate excess bile pigments from blood.
  • Avoid fatty, oily and fried foods all together; also fats like clarified butter, butter, oil and cream for at least two weeks should be consumed in limited amounts. Start fat in the form of butter and olive oil after two weeks as these can be easily digested and absorbed.
  • Have a bland food and avoid strong spices, coffee, pickles, tea, salted meats, pork, condiments and raw pulses.
  • Learn to relax, take adequate rest and avoid any kind of physical or emotional stress as far as possible.
