Smelly feet home cures

While not a serious problem, smelly feet can be quite embarrassing. Some people sweat more than others and the feet and hands tend to sweat more than other areas of the body. Sweat itself does not cause odour.

The characteristic bad smell from feet and underarms is caused by bacteria. If washing your feet regularly is not helping with the smell, here are some simple remedies that might help solve the problem.

  • Wash your feet with an antibacterial soap.

  • Wear clean cotton socks and change them every day
  • Try and alternate your footwear. Once you've worn a particular pair of shoes, give them a day or so out in the sun to dry out.
  • Apply anti-perspirant to your feet
  • Soak your feet in a tea bath. You can make this up by boiling a couple of tea bags in a pint of water for 15 minutes. Leave your feet in the tea bath for around half an hour every day.
  • Mix two tablespoons of Epsom salts in one quart of water and soak your feet as above
  • Another effective bath is made up by mixing one part vinegar with two parts water
  • Dust your feet off with baking soda or talcum powder. Some brands of talcum powder have anti-bacterial additives. Those may be more effective than regular talcum powder.

While taking these measures, wash sneakers and leave other closed footwear that you cannot wash, out in the sun to disinfect them.
