Tips to unplug ears

Ear blockage may be on account of ear wax, or changes in atmospheric pressure that happen when flying. It may also be that water went in your ear while bathing.
If ear blockage is accompanied by signs of infection such as fever or ear pain, consider speaking to your primary health care giver at the earliest.

Here are some simple remedies to clear ear blockage:

  • Chew some gum or suck on lozenges or hard candy. Swallowing frequently may clear the blockage
  • Hold your nostrils shut and close the ear that is not blocked and try and blow air outwards forcefully. If the ear blockage was caused by change in pressure, this method might be the most useful
  • Warm some olive oil and using a dropper put 4-5 drops of oil in the affected ear. Lie down with the blocked ear towards the ceiling. After 5 minutes, invert your ear so that the oil drains out. If there is a physical blockage because of wax, this method may help clear it
  • Sometimes just yawning will cause your ear to pop.

Whatever you do, do not insert objects like safety pins or rolled up paper to clean the inside of your ear. You may end up injuring yourself. Do not use cotton tips or your finger either, because you may just push ear wax deeper instead and make matters worse.
