How to get rid of a sty?

Sty home treatment

A stye may be a result of a bacterial infection or of the clogging of oil glands in the eyelids. A stye usually gets better on its own in less than a week, but certain measures may help speed up the process.

  • Apply a warm cloth compress 3-4 times a day.

Wet a washcloth in warm not hot water and lay it on the affected eye. The heat from the compress brings pus to the ofre quicker and helps the stye ripen and drain faster.
  • Soak a tea bag in warm water for five minutes and then leave it on the affected eye for about 5 minutes. This may cause the stye to shrink in size. The tannic acid in tea is said to be good for styes.
  • Don't touch the eye with your fingers without washing your hands with antibacterial soap first.
  • Don't try and pop it yourself. Picking at it or squeezing it may cause it to get infected. Trying to drain it yourself, before it is ready to drain may make it worse.
  • When you have a stye, try and avoid wearing contact lens.Use spectacles if you own a pair.

To help prevent a stye in the future you should take the following precautions:

  • Don't share your eye make up with anyone else.
  • Clean your contact lens regularly and use them exactly as recommended by your doctor
