Conjunctivitis causes and remedies

Pink eye or conjunctivitis may be caused by irritation, allergy or a viral or bacterial infection. In case of an infection, you may have gotten it from another infected person or through infected objects such as towels or sunglasses. Conjunctivitis usually clears up on its own in 48 hours.

Viral infections are not serious and can be treated at home. But if the redness persists for more than 48 hours, it may be a bacterial infection and should be shown to an eye doctor.

Here are some natural remedies to help alleviate symptoms until the eyes clear up:

  • Try applying a warm compress.

If that doesn't appear to give relief then apply a cool one.
  • Was your hands frequently and do not touch anything after touching your eyes without washing them first. Ideally you should use an antibacterial soap or rubbing alcohol
  • Don't cover the eyes. That raises the temperature around the eyes encouraging bacteria to grow.
  • If you use eye drops, then keep your eyes closed for at least 2 minutes afterwards
  • Don't wear contact lens during conjunctivitis. Wear spectacles instead if you own a pair.
  • If you have a discharge that is causing you discomfort, you can make up an eye wash with one part of baby shampoo in ten parts of water. Use a cotton ball dipped in this solution to clean the discharge while keeping the eye closed.
