Canker sores causes and treatment

Canker sores or apthous ulcers are little painful ulcers that appear inside the mouth. The exact cause in most cases is not known. The sores are typically lined with a red border and appear on the tongue, on the insides of the cheeks or lips or on the underside of the mouth.

They usually resolve within two weeks and are not contagious. Frequent sores may be a sign of some other underlying condition such as celiac disease, Irritable Bowel syndrome or some kind of oral cancer. Frequent sores should be referred to a doctor.

Some natural remedies for dealing with canker sores incude:

  • German chamomile: In a study conducted 82% people said they felt excellent pain relief from canker sores while using this remedy. However, people sensitive to chamomile may develop allergic reactions
  • Lady's mantle: A gel containing lady's mantle was tested in a study for its efficacy in healing canker sores. &5% of people reported pain relief and healing as compared to 40% for placebo.
  • Supplementing with Vitamin B12 is also said to be helpful.
  • Bee propolis has also been used traditionally for mouth sores and is said to be an effective remedy.

When you have canker sores, avoid smoking and chewing on tobacco products. Also avoid chewing gum and coffee. Ingredients in mouthwash may irritate sores further so avoid using it until your sores heal.
