Gout natural remedies Gout is caused by the overproduction or improper excretion of uric acid. It is a form of arthritis wherein affected joints become swollen and is accompanied by severe pain in some cases.
Here are some natural remedies to help with the problem:
- Keep the affected part elevated if possible and immobile.
- For intense pain OTC painkillers may be needed. Please speak to a doctor in that case. But do avoid aspirin and acetaminophen as they may make the condition worse
- A poultice made of activated charcoal powder and flax seed may be applied.
Take half a cup of activated charcoal powder and mix with 3-4 tablespoons of flax meal. Add enough water to make a paste. After applying the poultice use a gauze pad to hold it in place for at least half an hour - Taking activated charcoal internally also helps reduce the level of uric acid.
- Applying an ice compress may also help with the pain.
- Drink plenty of water and try and cut down on alcohol consumption. If possible, don't drink at all.
- Avoid food that have a high purine content and take only one serving of foods with a moderately high purine content.
High purine foods:
- hearts
- mussels
- yeast
- herring
- sweetbreads
- sardines
Moderately high purine foods:
- anchovies
- mutton
- grouse
- veal
- liver
- bacon
- salmon
- kidneys
- turkey
- partridge
- goose
- trout
- haddock
- scallops
- pheasant
