Clove is a miracle herb. The plant is referred to as Eugenia arena. It is an essential oil, insoluble in water.


Clove is used for culinary purposes, due to the enhancement of flavor. Ointments containing clove is used for inflammatory conditions. Antiseptic properties of clove make it indispensable in toothpastes. Alertness is induced and headache is relieved by clove oil, which is attributed to its sharp flavor. It is prepared industrially by steam distillation.

It is not easy to prepare it at home. It is easily available with the chemist or in grocery shop. It finds its use in toothache and aromatherapy. It is also used as a remedial measure for cough, cold, fever, bronchitis and sore throat. Eugenol is the chemical component responsible for its therapeutic function. It is used as an anesthetic for fishes and is also used as a natural herbicide.

Clove oil is used in oil painting. This is due to its delayed drying effect. Oxidation of the drying oils, such as poppy, safflower, walnut and linseed oil is prevented. Its fungistatic and antimicrobial properties make it effective against warts, acne, parasites and scars. It also proves beneficial against mosquitoes and is used in repellents.
