Alternative Treatment for Menstrual Cramps

Menstrual cramps are one of the most common problems associated with the menstrual cycle. Placing a warm compress on the limbs and abdomen prove beneficial against cramps. Peppermint is helpful in relieving digestive tract spasms, headache and bloating. Black cohosh exhibits anti spasmodic properties. Dong quai is a herb that aids in regulating the menstrual cycle. Studies reveal the anti spasmodic properties, thereby relieving cramps associated with menses.

Exercise reduces stress and tension, thus reducing abdominal cramps. Prostaglandins and cytokine release is decreased by the poly unsaturated fatty acid, gamma linolenic acid, present in evening primrose oil. Gamma linolenic acid is also seen in cold water fish and black currant oil. Bloating and nausea associated with menstrual cycle is eliminated by a decoction made of fresh ginger.

Emptying the bladder, immediately after the urge to urinate is helpful. A hot bath might prove useful. Alternate methods of meditation and yoga are effective.  Herbal teas of mint, chamomile, blackberry and raspberry help in soothing the muscles. It also aids in relaxing the mood swings. Painkillers and antibiotics are equally effective, provided consumed under physician's guidance.
