An important point to remember is that vomiting and nausea are symptoms of an existing medical condition and is not a specific illness. The sensation that the stomach needs to empty itself and the act of throwing up are signs of various underlying diseases causing the symptom. It is strongly advised to consult a doctor immediately, especially if the child has been continuously vomiting and is complaining of stomach ache.

One important step to take before the doctor arrives is to ensure that the child is hydrated. Allow the child to have small quantities of water or tiny sips of freshly squeezed lemon juice in order to maintain the electrolytes in the body. Throwing up a number of times during the day can result in severe electrolyte imbalance in the body and may cause a situation of intense dehydration.

Some of the more important causes of nausea and vomiting are
  • stomach illnesses
  • specific medication causing adverse allergic reactions
  • obstruction in the bowel
  • stomach infections
  • reflux disease
  • head injuries
  • renal diseases
  • eating disorders
  • overwhelming body infection spread through the bloodstream
  • side-effects from specific medications
  • pyloric stenosis, or narrowing of the pyloric sphincter that blocks the passage of food from the stomach into the duodenum
In order to rest the stomach and at the same time avoid dehydration, the child must be administered clear fluids for the first 24 hours of any illness. Some types of clear fluids that are easy for the stomach to absorb include lukewarm water, lukewarm clear soups or broth or popsicles. Do not let the child take in too much fluid at one particular time as it is likely to cause the nausea to worsen. Avoid milk products completely as the enzymes in the milk can cause the stomach to become intolerant towards lactose.

It is important to access medical care as soon as possible especially if the symptoms have lasted for more than 24 hours. If the patient starts to show signs of dehydration and the diagnosis seems uncertain it may cause the patient to become extremely fragile and the child may begin to develop an inability to tolerate fluids. Hence a healthcare provider must be contacted immediately in order to prevent an emergency situation.
