Symptoms and Treatment for Spider Bites

If you have just noticed a swelling on your arm or leg, surrounded by an area of reddened skin, this is probably caused by the bite of an insect. Spider bites usually leave a small red mark on your skin. There is also some amount of swelling but unless the spider is really poisonous, there is usually no other reaction.

When you notice a bite on your body it is always advisable to consult a doctor who will be able to help you identify the insect that has caused the bite. Some people react badly to a spider bite. They may suffer from some kind of allergic reaction to the bite. You may also notice them coughing, even wheezing. They may develop diarrhea and cramps of the stomach. Other violent reactions include light headedness, swelling of lips or a feeling of being disoriented.

For a spider bite, the first thing you should do is to elevate the limb which has been bitten. Use an ice pack on the bite. However, remember to keep a thin cloth on your skin on which you can place the ice pack. If there is no ice available, you can use a bowl of cold water to place a compress on the bite. After about an hour of using an ice pack you can then use heat on the bite. Dip a towel in a bowl of warm water and apply on the bite.
Wash the bite with water and dry it. Avoid scratching the bite. If you notice any blister on the bite, don't scratch or pinch it open.
