(14 Mar 2008)

Hot flashes are typically a symptom of menopause and are commonly experienced by women as they go through menopause. Women sometimes ask what kind of symptoms should they anticipate during menopause, but in reality every experience is unique and each woman experiences the symptoms differently. For example, one woman may find insomnia as a chief symptom of menopause while another may emphasize that aching joints are her primary symptoms.

Hot flashes are usually experienced by most women but are not necessarily a standing feature experienced by all. This particular symptom is a kind of warm feeling that spreads all across the body and especially felt in the head and neck areas. The feeling of warmth or hot flashes is likely to be accompanied by excessive perspiration or flushing. Hot flashes typically last for approximately 30 seconds and may even go on for several minutes. Health experts believe that a combination of hormonal imbalances and biochemical fluctuations caused due to reduced estrogen levels in the body which result in hot flashes.

Since menopause is a natural transition, most women who experience hot flashes do not require treatment unless the symptoms interfere with daily life. Most women who experience the unpleasant symptoms report that hot flashes gradually fade away in due course of time. However if the experiences are moderate to severe, doctors usually prescribe hormonal therapy. One of the most long-standing and well-known treatment for hot flashes is estrogen therapy while in some cases doctors even recommend progesterone therapy.

Some natural tips that can help in reducing the severity of hot flashes include:

  • Consuming soya milk. Medical studies and reports have indicated that soy brings about some benefits in reducing hot flashes and other unpleasant symptoms of menopause. It is far better to obtain soy from natural food products rather than supplements. Natural foods that contain soy as an integral ingredient are tofu, soya milk, whole soya beans, soya powder and tempeh.
  • One popular herb that is known to provide effective relief from hot flashes is black cohosh. Natural health experts recommend consuming approximately 25 mg to 50 mg of black cohosh three times a day in order to relieve the unpleasant symptoms of menopause. Research indicates that more than 80 percent of women who participated in a black cohosh study reported drastic improvement within eight weeks of treatment.
  • Daily and regular consumption of vitamin E is also believed to reduce the occurrence and severity of unpleasant symptoms including hot flashes and night sweats.
  • A balanced diet and regular daily exercise also plays a very important role in regulating and balancing the symptoms of menopause.

Alternative Treatment for Hot Flashes

Hot flashes are fairly common among women who are approaching the age of menopause. These are generally attributed to a variety of reasons although the easiest way to describe these would be to say that they are a result of the malfunctioning of the thermostat of the body.  You should consult your doctor about these sudden flashes when your skin seems to burn up. However, you can try some easy techniques to keep things under control.

You can keep cool by wearing loose clothes, made of natural fiber. Taking a long bath just before you get into bed will help you too. Drinking lots of water and fruits juices are other simple, easy to follow techniques to keep cool. You can help control the intensity of your hot flashes by learning to relax. Deep breathing and other relaxation techniques will help you.

Your diet should include food that is rich in estrogen. Eat garlic, sesame seed, wheat, yam, papaya, oats, tofu and peas. You should avoid drinking too much tea or coffee. Spicy, oily food should be avoided. Instead you should eat healthy food items. Drink water throughout the day and when you experience a hot flash drink a glass of cold water. You can also ensure that you exercise regularly. Regular exercise will help you feel healthy.
