Health advice on preventing an eye infection Eye infections in dogs can occur for a variety of reasons. Some foreign matter may get lodged in the eye, or the cornea may get scratched or it may be conjunctivitis. Eye infections are pretty common and are usually not anything to worry about.
These are some common telltale signs of an infection:
- Eye discharge
- Redness
- Trying to rub or scratch the eye
- Squinting
You may want to get a cone shape instrument to cover her head so she is not able to paw or scratch the area because that will only make it worse. Any coloured discharge that lasts for longer than 48 hours should be shown to a vet. The vet may prescribe an antibiotic ointment for the problem. If the problem is not too serious here are some home remedies you can try:
- Give him margosa capsules with his food. Margosa is a natural antifungal, antiviral and anti -inflammatory so no matter what kind of infection it is, it should get better
- Wash the area with warm water and baby shampoo
- Mix a teaspoon of boric acid in one quart of sterilized water. Wash the eye out with this mixture
- Wrap your dog up in a towel for a while and for as long as you can place two dripping tea bags over both eyes
Here are some steps you can take to prevent further eye infections:
- Get your dog's eyes checked at every visit to the vet
- Examine the eyes frequently yourself
- Don't let your dog stick her head out in a moving vehicle
- Keep wiping away any discharge that accumulates in the eye.
