Treatment for dandruff

Dandruff is a scalp condition that causes itching, flaking and hair fall. It is caused by a fungus that is commonly found in the scalp, but overgrowth leads to dandruff. One of the first things to look at is whether you truly have dandruff or just a dry scalp.

If you have dry skin all over, there is a good chance you don't have true dandruff and the skin on your scalp is flaking and falling off due to dryness. Try applying oil on your head before washing it off and see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't then you probably do have dandruff.

But not to worry as there are several home remedies for dandruff and one of them is bound to work for you.

  • An essential oil called Tea tree oil is very effective in treating the problem as it is a natural antifungal. Several shampoos contain this product and some studies have shown that shampoos containing tea tree oil cause a substantial reduction in dandruff, so this is a convenient remedy to try.
  • You can rub the juice of a few lemons into your head and leave it on for an hour or so before washing it off. This combats the dandruff and also exfoliates the dry skin on your scalp.
  • Another remedy is to mix apple cider vinegar and water in equal proportions and then pour it into a spray bottle. Spray this mixture all over your head, while taking precautions to avoid the eyes and ears. Wrap a towel around your head and leave it on for 15 minutes. Shampoo as usual.
  • You can also eat a nutritional supplement called biotin .Biotin deficiency can sometimes cause dandruff.

Keep your combs clean so as to not re-infect yourself once you have gotten rid of the problem and in future do not share other people's combs or brushes.
