Stretch marks are best described as fine lines on the surface of the skin. When the skin gets stretched to a very large extent on account of rapid growth, particularly due to excessive weight gain or excessive weight loss or a pregnancy, it is unable to bounce back. Instead, this stretching of the skin leads to the formation of fine lines or marks, which we commonly refer to as stretch marks.
These marks generally appear purplish or reddish in color in the beginning and then turn into a light white color. Stretch marks are formed in the dermis; this is the middle or central layer of the skin, its elastic nature enables the skin to maintain its shape. But when the skin is subject to constant stretching, this elastic dermis tends to break down, and this is what causes stretch marks. Stretch marks are common in both men as well as women. The thighs, abdominal area, breasts, hips, lower back and upper arms are areas where they are most commonly found.
The appearance of stretch marks can be reduced considerably with the help of some home remedies. Take a quarter cup of aloe vera gel, half a cup of olive oil, oil from six capsules of vitamin E and the liquid of four vitamin A capsules. Mix the ingredients in a blender, after which pour it into a cup and store in the refrigerator. Apply the mixture twice a day on the affected area, this should yield results in a few weeks time. You could also massage aloe vera gel, lavender oil or vitamin E oil on the affected area daily. This is one of the simplest ways of treating these marks. Another alternative would be to apply avocado oil, castor oil or olive oil on the marks, this will also work well.
Shea butter is also known to work well on stretch marks. It is very good source of both Vitamin A and Vitamin E. Simply apply a little shea butter on the marks 2-3 times a day. In addition to shea butter, cocoa butter is also equally good for the skin. Applying it on the affected area daily will also be equally beneficial. This will help in reducing the lines to a large extent. Include plenty of fruits, green vegetables, dairy products (low fat), liver, tomatoes, nuts and seeds into your diet. This will also help in getting rid of stretch marks.

The fine lines that are formed on the skin surface – especially abdominal area, thighs and breasts – can be quite unpleasant and mar confidence especially if they are on visible parts of the body like legs or arms. Stretch marks, as they are called, are usually formed post pregnancy or due to sudden loss or gain of weight, sudden growth during adolescence and also because of stress. These marks are left because of stretching or tearing of elastic fibers, which disrupts the natural collagen production. Initially pink in color, they turn white eventually and if not treated appropriately, do not fade on their own. But then there are home remedies that can fade them out easily, even if your marks are old.
Increasing the consumption of Vitamin K or applying Vitamin K cream gets rid of stretch marks. Include foods like green leafy vegetables, dairy products, liver and tomatoes in your diet. Protein, Vitamin C and Vitamin E promote tissue growth so include lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Eating lots of seeds and nuts that contain zinc will also help you. You can massage several other products on the marks to get rid of them. It works two ways, the products lighten the stretch marks with their properties and massage stimulates blood circulation helping the collagen to distribute evenly, thereby fading the scars. Lavender oil applied thrice a day will take care of the marks, as also will aloe vera gel or Vitamin E. You can make your own body tonic with one ounce of oil of any of these - avocado, sweet almond, and jojoba – along with seven drops of lavender. Adding a few drops of chamomile to it, apply on the affected areas. Another effective mix you can prepare is ½-cup olive oil, ¼-cup aloe Vera gel, liquid extracted from 6 capsules of Vitamin E and 4 capsules of Vitamin A. Blend these together and store in the fridge. Apply the lotion on the stretch marks. You will see results very soon. You can also rub apricot scrub on the stretch marks to make them fade away. While you try all these, exercising regularly will also help you a lot as it tones the muscles and keeps them firm. Rubbing aroma oil and especially cocoa butter twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening have been known to get rid of stretch marks too.

Treatment for stretch marks Stretch marks are a very common phenomenon amongst both men and women, though it is noticed more in women. They occur due to overstretching of the skin and are seen as reddish marks across the skin, which turn white over time. Usually noticed on the breasts, thighs, hips and buttocks, they are caused due to obesity or rapid weight loss, pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, malnutrition and even use of certain medications or steroids which affect the skin texture. The best way to prevent stretch marks is to drink plenty of water to enhance the elasticity of the skin making it soft and supple and maintain a well balanced diet to avoid putting on weight. Keep your body toned by exercising regularly. Massaging the stretch marks with cod liver oil, olive oil or even Vitamin E oil can help to remove them. Applying cocoa butter on the stretch marks can also help to reduce the marks considerably. Another homemade mixture that is efficient in reducing stretch marks can be made with 1 oz of avocado or jojoba oil, with 7 drops f lavender and 5 drops of chamomile. Regular application and massage with this mixture helps to reduce the stretch marks over a period of time. You can prevent stretch marks by regularly massaging stretch mark prone areas with a mixture of ½ cup virgin olive oil, ½ cup Aloe Vera gel, liquid from 6 vitamin E capsule and 4 vitamin A capsules.
