Urinary tract infections or UTI are an infection that occurs in any area of the urinary tract due to the action of bacteria. Once the bacteria enter the bladder it infects the urine and begins to spread. The bacteria can also spread upwards to the kidneys and cause infection there.

Bacteria are usually present near the anus and the groin area, and can enter the urinary tract through the urethra. UTI generally develops more commonly in women. This could be because the urethra is much shorter in females. Improper functioning of the urinary tract could also make a person prone to developing urinary tract infections. Infections commonly result when catheters are used in the urethra in elderly people or in those with loss of bladder control. The symptoms of UTI generally start with pain during urination and there may also be a burning or tingling sensation. It is common to also experience pain in the lower abdomen, sides and back. Fever, chills and a general feeling of tiredness also occurs. In severe cases, there could be blood present in the urine.

Individuals with diabetes tend to have low immunity and as such may be at risk for UTI. Urinary tract infections also tend to recur and most people, who have had it once, do tend to get affected again. Bacteria can also enter a woman’s vagina through the urethra during sexual intercourse due to the movement of the penis that may cause the bacteria to get pushed inside. Suppressing the urge to urinate and holding the urine in for too long can also allow for infection to take place as this causes the bladder to expand too much. This weakens the bladder and emptying the bladder starts to become difficult. The urine that remains behind in the bladder can become infected.

The best way to get rid of an infection of the urinary tract is to consume a large amount of water and other fluids. This will allow for more frequent urination, thereby assisting in the flushing out of the bacteria. Increasing vitamin C intake also helps in urinary tract infections since it raises the acidity level in the urine. This serves to curb the growth of bacteria. A well known remedy for improving a urinary tract infection is to drink plenty of cranberry juice which is high in quinolic acid and vitamin C. These are known to fight infection by preventing the bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder. Echinacea tea drunk daily after a meal is also known to be effective in providing relief from urinary tract infection.

Natural Treatment for Urinary Tract Infection

When bacteria enter the urinary tube, it results in a urinary tract infection (UTI). A UTI is mostly is a female problem though men are known to suffer from it as well. Children do get UTIs but these cases are usually quite few, especially in comparison to the adults. The common symptoms for a UTI include a burning sensation when you are urinating, the need to void urine very frequently, and blood in the urine. You should ensure that you treat a UTI at once because if left untreated, it could develop in more complications such as a bladder infection which may finally result in a kidney infection.

The easiest way to treat this is to flush the bacteria out. Ensure that you drink copious quantities of liquids, especially water. As soon as you feel the first signs of a UTI, you should mix a little baking soda in a regular sized glass of water and drink this solution. It will help raise the acid-base balance of your urine. According to some studies, cranberry juice has also proved beneficial while treating a UTI because this juice prevents bacteria from sticking to the sides of the urinary tract. If you have some associated pain, you can ease it by using a heating pad on your abdominal region. You should also dress comfortably and ensure that you do not wear any tight clothing while you have this infection.
