Causes, Symptoms and Treatment for Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is a condition in which the conjunctiva, or the membrane covering the eye, is inflamed. It is a very common problem and is also referred to as pink eye or sore eyes. Conjunctivitis is usually caused as a result of a bacterial or viral infection. Because this condition is quite contagious, conjunctivitis sometimes occurs as an epidemic. The most common signs are a redness in the eye, watery eyes, and itching around the eyes. You could also have eye crust or a yellow discharge that makes your eyes stick shut while you are sleeping.

You should ensure that you wash your eyes often because this will soothe the irritation and the itching. Due to its contagious nature, ensure that you wash your hands after you wash your eyes and avoid touching and sharing items such as linen because this will only spread the infection. Keeping your eyes clean is also very important – keep cotton swabs dipped in tepid water handy to wipe away any discharge. Crush coriander leaves in water and use this as an eye wash. There are also some dietary changes that you can make to treat conjunctivitis. Mix some honey with gooseberry juice and drink this at least twice a day. You should also avoid eating foods that are very high in starch and sugar content. Eat foods that are high in vitamins B2 and A.
