Sty alternative remedies Although painful, styes are usually rather harmless, minor infections that do not require any treatment and heal on their own. The stye is simply a bacterial infection of the eyelid, more specifically a kind of pimple affecting one of the sebaceous glands on the eyelid. The infection results in a yellow lump and often in inflammation of the entire eyelid, making the entire area painful, tender, and uncomfortable, and causing the eyes to sting and water.
You should avoid wearing contact lenses and make up for a week. As with pimples, you should also avoid squeezing, pressing, scratching, or bursting a stye. If the stye does happen to burst on its own, make sure that you clean it thoroughly, and rinse your eye as well. If it does not burst, you can simply apply a warm compress to the stye and in fact to the entire eye area. This provides a great deal of relief, and also hastens the draining and healing of the stye. If you feel brave enough, you can also pluck the eyelash from the affected gland, which will also help the stye drain quicker.
If the stye does not heal within a week or is particularly painful, you should visit a doctor as some medical treatment might help.
