Derived from a Greek word that means ‘to boil’, eczema or dermatitis is a group of persistent skin disorders that are inflammation of the epidermis and include symptoms like dryness and rash, redness, swelling, blistering, flaking and bleeding. Eczema mostly affects hands, back of the knees, neck, upper chest and arms. The system’s inability to flush the toxins out of the body, allergies, poor metabolism, cold and dry weather conditions, nutritional deficiencies, physical and emotional stress, excessive heat, smoke, chemicals, detergents and solvents are some factors that trigger eczema.

While it is not contagious, eczema is believed to be hereditary. If you are allergic to any food products, avoid them. Dairy products, preservatives, citrus fruits, nuts and eggs are known to aggravate eczema too.

If you have a rash, wear only cotton clothes as they don’t irritate the skin. Avoid exposing your body to water for a long time as it causes dryness. Eat lots of vegetables and fruits and drink about eight glasses of water, preferably warm water to keep your system clean of toxins.

You can also try some simple and inexpensive home remedies to relieve you of eczema. One such extremely simple yet effective remedy is sunbathing every morning, which kills the bacteria and brings down inflammation. Additionally you can directly apply any of these on the affected areas: coconut oil, mudpack, mashed papaya seeds, witch hazel, and spearmint leaf juice. These will not only get rid of itching but also make the skin soft. Sandalwood and camphor are known for the cooling effect they have on skin. Mix one teaspoon each of sandalwood paste and camphor and apply it on the skin to reduce inflammation and itchiness. Turmeric and margosa also have medicinal qualities required to cure itches. Make a paste with 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder and bitter margosa leaves each and smear it on the affected skin. You can also make a mix of 50 gms of fresh margosa leaves and 200 grams of mustard oil boiled in an iron vessel. Boil the decoction till the margosa leaves are black, cool and then sieve the oil. Apply it four times a day. If you follow this regime for a year, you will get rid of eczema. Another effective remedy is applying a pulp made of almond leaves and water. Till your problem is cured, avoid using soaps or any other chemicals agents on the affected skin.

Eczema alternative remedies

A paste of equal parts sandalwood powder and rose water is a highly effective method for getting rid of eczema. This will also cool the skin down so that you don't feel like scratching it all the time. Make a paste of powdered nutmeg and tomato peels and apply this to particularly itchy spots. This is also an excellent remedy for getting rid of eczema. Both these solutions will provide soothing relief from dryness and itching. Another excellent remedy is to apply chilled milk cream to the affected area. This will help it to heal as well. Camphor is an old Ayurvedic tactic for dealing with eczema. Try and get a lotion if you can, and if it is not available in lotion form, you can mix some powdered camphor in milk and use this like a lotion. You can try to get some pure vitamin E oil and apply this on your red spots for quick healing.

There are also some simple dietary additions you can make that will help you with the itching. Drink a teaspoon of sandalwood syrup mixed in a glass of cool water. Likewise, a teaspoon of rose syrup mixed with chilled milk and had every morning will also soothe your body considerably. For the duration of the problem, eliminate anything sour from your diet, as it will only aggravate the itching.
