Many people are misled by the name and relate heartburns to a disease of the heart. Heartburns are the result of stomach acid entering the esophagus – commonly known as the food pipe. This acid causes a burning pain or sensation in the chest that goes right up to the back of the throat causing great discomfort.
The most common reason for this condition is faulty eating habits. The stomach secretes several acids to break down the food that you eat. When you eat an unusually large amount of food the stomach is forced to produce a large amount of acid in order to digest the food.
This weakens the stomach lining and causes the stomach acids to back up into the esophagus. Fried and greasy foods require more acid and so a large meal consisting of oily food will greatly increase your chances of experiencing a heartburn. Other than that, smoking, tight clothing and lack of sleep are also some of the other reasons. Lack of exercise, not chewing food well and eating fast also increase the problem. Drinking water with meals increases the content in ones stomach, causing heartburn. So if one makes these changes in lifestyle, they wouldn’t suffer from heartburns.
Consult a doctor if you suffer from heartburn for a prolonged time because it can cause ulcers or gastroesophageal-reflux disease (GERD). However, it’s quite possible to deal with the problem with some simple remedies. Avoid caffeine, chocolate, citrus fruits or juices, tomato or tomato-based foods, alcohol and tobacco. Supplement your meal with a cup of curd to balance the acid and spices. Drink two to four cups of coconut water daily, this is an excellent preventive measure against heartburns. Drinking chilled milk or chewing basil leaves when the problem aggravates, helps in providing temporary relief. There are some juices that help in getting rid of heartburns. Aloe vera juice, raw potato and cabbage juice are known to be most beneficial as they provide a cooling effect. But you need to make sure that the potatoes and cabbage are fresh. Ginger is also very effective in giving relief from heartburn. You can grind ginger and make tea or after meal consume ginger root with honey. You can also try making some beneficial juices to cure heartburns on your own too, for instance you could mix a few pieces of ripe tamarind with a sugar candy to taste and drink this twice a day. Apart from ginger - garlic and fiber rich food absorbs excess acid and gas, so include these in your everyday diet.
