Home cures for colds There are several home remedies that can help you in your current situation. Run a hot bath and add a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil to it. Stand in this for a good 20 minutes. The fumes from the oil should loosen your phlegm and the heat travelling up from your feet should help with congestion. Remember to stay warm after you come out of this bath as well, so that the oil continues working. Grapes are an excellent expectorant, as they clear up the lungs. Make syrup with five parts of onion juice and one part of honey and store this. Have it warm thrice a day to watch the phlegm race out of your body. Twice a day, have a glass of hot milk with half a teaspoon of turmeric powder. This will help cure the cold, loosen phlegm and fight infection. You may add a teaspoon of honey for taste. Make herbal green tea with crushed holy basil added to it and sip it hot. You can also throw in cloves, cardamom and peppercorns – all of these will help with loosening phlegm. Ginger is one of the finest remedies for taking away phlegm as well as getting rid of nausea. If you can, suck on a piece of it during the day. Going for walks outdoors is the best way to get rid of both the cold and the additional nausea.
